Welcome to the Christchurch New Zealand Wireless Community Webpage

WARNING: YOU NEED LINE OF SITE TO THE CASHMERE HILLS. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE A

MICROWAVE TOWER IN VICTORIA PARK.

It would help having a good sensitive card, say -90dB to -95dB at 1MB connection. All the gear is 802.11b standard. We will look at 802.11a when costs come down. At the moment, it is twice the cost and more. Use the biggest antenna possible , unless you are next to it, lol. We usually install a PCI card or PCI adapter to fit a laptop card, you will need an adapter/pigtail lead to go from the card     (a small connector on the card to a larger connector to handle the larger coax to run to your antenna. We recommend a run no longer than 10M. We use a low loss microwave cable for $5 per meter plus connectors.

WARNING: Do not use standard RG58 Coax Cable. Some people believe this will work.

Maybe if you have a run of 1/2M and do not want very good signal strength.

We use a special RG58 witch is low loss, double shielded type.

This then goes to the 24dBi gain Parabolic Dish that is on your roof etc. You may need a hockey stick and stays if you do not have line of site from your TV antenna, that and the dish is a little on the large size.
It is very easy to alien your antenna with the software that comes with your card. You will have a live bar graph that will show between 0 to 100%

We have setup up a wireless community network in Christchurch, New Zealand, which continues to expand as new user join us.
This allows our users to share files, play online games, video conference, and chat between themselves
We may also consider adding a high speed internet gateway to the network in the future.
The network uses 802.11b wireless networking equipment at a speed of up to 11 Mb/s over a 20 km radius.
The main network repeater is sited on The Port Hills, and you will need to be able to see the repeater from your proposed site location to access the network (see the map below).

It may be possible to connect to a client node closer to you, and have them forward your data to the main repeater site, although  this will slow your connection speed.

Costs : We now have a charge of $5.00 per Month or $50.00 per year to connect. We give users access to the Yobbo Wireless Network for a week fee of charge to see if they are happy with their setup before incurring any costs.

The money is used to cover power and ongoing upgrades to make the Yobbo Wireless Network enabling more users to connect.

Users will be asked to fill in some details, once we have received those, we will enable their Wireless MAC Address to the Access Point they will connect to.

A new web site is currently being built which will be able to take all the details above mentioned with a lot of automation in setting configuration for a smother running Network.
